Alex Ovechkin has become the 5th fastest player in NHL history to score 500 goals.
The feat was accomplished just a few minutes ago as Ovechkin took a feed from Jason Chimera on the power play and fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Ottawa Senators goaltender, Andrew Hammond to put the Caps up 5-1. He was mauled by his teammates after the goal as the entire bench sprang to the ice in celebration of the Great 8's accomplishment.
Ovechkin surpassed Boston Bruins and New York Rangers great Phil Esposito (803) for the 5th fastest in history.
It was Ovechkin's 25th goal of the year.
At 30 years of age, Ovechkin has tallied 500 goals, 433 assists and 933 points in just 801 games.
