New Jersey Devils: On The Signing Of Vojtech Mozik (Devils)

The Devils have added another young defenseman to the organization.

This time it's 22-year-old blue liner Vojtech Mozik, who has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the team.

Mozik is a 6'2", 200 pound right-handed defenseman. He has spent the last few seasons playing overseas for HC Plzen in Czech Republic's top hockey league.

He led the Czech league in defensive scoring with 10 goals last year so he clearly has some offensive ability. His totals over the last two seasons - 18 goals and 43 points in 102 regular games - reflect that.

The book on Mozik is he is a capable defenseman who has a bomb of a shot and can produce some points. One of the bigger knocks in his game is that he can be undisciplined, which is evident by his penalty minute totals (154 in 102 games) over the last couple years.

Interestingly enough he attended Rangers rookie camps in previous years and was linked to the team as recent as a week ago.

It seems as if Ray Shero and the Devils stole Mozik from under the Rangers' fingertips.

Mozik is on a two-way contract so nothing is guaranteed - he could have just been signed for organizational depth - but perhaps he feels he'll have a better chance at cracking the Devils' lineup, especially if they end up trading a young blue liner like Jon Merrill or Eric Gelinas.

What, if anything, this means going forward remains to be seen but I like that Shero isn't afraid to look overseas in order to bring more talent into the organization.
