New Jersey Devils Name John Hynes Head Coach (Devils)

The Devils called a press conference today to announce the team's new head coach.

That would be former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton coach John Hynes, who has signed a three-year deal to be New Jersey's new bench boss.

At 40 years old Hynes becomes the youngest coach currently in the NHL.

Hynes spent the last five seasons coaching the Baby Penguins. They made the playoffs each of the five years he was there and posted an excellent 231-126-27 record in the process. His team had a plus-181 goal differential in that span and finished first in goals against in four of the five years.

That's pretty impressive when you factor in Pittsburgh was one of the more injury prone teams in the NHL during his tenure with Wilkes-Barre. That means chunks of his players were regularly called up for extended periods of time and despite that Hynes' teams continued to pile up the wins.

Hynes is not a big name coach but with his track record in the AHL he was going to get a chance soon. If Ray Shero wanted Hynes he'd have to make the move now.

Since Hynes was employed by the Penguins and was a legitimate asset to the organization compensation will be necessary.

The Devils have three 3rd round picks in 2016 and will reportedly give their own to Pittsburgh as compensation for hiring Hynes.

If hiring Hynes works out that will be a small price to pay. The Devils are surely hoping that's the case.
