New Jersey Devils GM Ray Shero took care of another bit of housekeeping today as he signed Sergey Kalinin to a one-year extension worth $800,000.
The 25-year-old Russian is coming off a respectable first season as a Devil where he tallied 15 points and posted ~team average numbers in terms of 5 v 5 possession.
As was the case with Jacob Josefson and Beau Bennett, the Devils elected to give Kalinin a one-year deal on the cheap before deciding if he is worth keeping around long-term.
This not only gives Shero roster flexibility moving forward but also makes them easier assets to peddle at the deadline should the team be out of contention.
On top of all else the one-year deals give players more incentive to show their best stuff as they are playing for contracts.
With Kalinin re-upped Kyle Palmieri, who filed for arbitration on Tuesday, Reid Boucher and Reece Scarlett are the only restricted free agents in need of new deals.
