The New Jersey Devils took care of a bit of house keeping today as they signed Jacob Josefson to a one-year contract extension worth $1.1 million.
Josefson didn't produce much offense last season - he had 14 points in 58 games - but played a key role on the penalty kill and was the team's best regular in terms of possession.
At just $1.1 million he seems like a good value signing.
Meanwhile the Devils also signed forward Luke Gazdic to a one-year, two-way contract worth $700,000 at the NHL level.
Gazdic would bring a physical presence to the lineup and nothing else. He has five goals and eight points in 136 NHL games and has posted an abysmal 41.2CF% in that span. Without Gazdic on the ice the Oilers, a consistent bottom feeder, controlled 47.1% of the shot attempts at 5 v 5.
That his relative numbers were horrible despite playing on a bad team is not a good sign.
He'll compete for a job in camp but unless he shows up a much better player than he has been in years past, which won't happen, he shouldn't be given any consideration for a roster spot.
