Remember when NHL teams could sign coaches and GM who had been fired without having to shell out compensation?
The Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins will receive compensatory draft picks to complete the hiring of Dan Bylsma, Mike Babcock, and Pete Chiarelli. Bylsma and Chiarelli were shown the door fired by their respective employers and have since been hired by other NHL teams. Bylsma signed with Buffalo this week. Babcock would have bcome UFA on June 30, however, chose to sign with Toronto instead Buffalo. Chiarelli was hired by Edmonton in April.
The winds of change may be blowing again inside the NHL. Elliotte Friedman reported Saturday night on Hockey Night in Canada that the current coach and GM compensatory draft choice guidelines may soon be changed.
The matter will be discussed at next month's Board of Governors meeting.
"They'll say, "Look, if somebody's been fired, you don't get compensation for them." It's only if you get somebody still working for a team. That's the way it's going to work out in the future.
The meeting is scheduled to take place after the Stanley Cup Final and prior to the draft.
