The Calgary Flames have finally sorted out their goaltending situation.
After a couple weeks of carrying three netminders GM Brad Treliving finally decided it was time to cut one loose. As a result he elected to waive Karri Ramo following three performances that left a lot to be desired.
Ramo wasn't completely at fault as the team didn't play well in front of him but he failed to bail them out in any way, shape or form as he posted a dreadful .879 save percentage and allowed 11(!) goals in 151 minutes of action.
Given how poorly Ramo has played he unsurprisingly cleared waivers despite several teams in need of help (i.e. Buffalo) at least in the short-term. He will be assigned to the Stockton Heat.
Assignment to Stockton likely later today. #Flames https://t.co/H47Jtt1lc7
— Pat Steinberg (@Fan960Steinberg) October 22, 2015In the meantime Jonas Hiller and rookie goaltender Joni Ortio will carry the load with the big club. I imagine Ortio will be given a shot soon but Hiller will presumably do most of the heavy lifting.
I believe the Flames did dump the right player - I didn't think they should have re-signed Ramo to begin with - but this certainly doesn't solve all the team's problems.
Dougie Hamilton and Mark Giordano don't look themselves, Sean Monahan has just three points in six games, the team is getting crushed nightly during 5 vs 5 play and the list goes on.
If the Flames don't solve some of these problems - and fast - it won't matter who is between the pipes.
