Hotstove: Undervalued Player Teams Should Target In Free Agency? (NHL)

Todd Cordell

For me it's Jakub Nakladal.

He was a regular in the Flames' lineup down the stretch and fared extremely well while playing, for the most part, on the 3rd pairing.

With Nakladal on the ice the Flames controlled 53% of the shot attempts and 52.4% of the goals at 5 v 5. Without Nakladal those numbers dipped to 48.5 and 44%.

The sample size wasn't large (27 games) but it's clear he can at least handle himself in a 3rd pairing role.

He wouldn't cost much and he's a legitimately good depth player. Someone will be rewarded for taking a shot on him.

Jason Lewis Thomas Vanek.

Just kidding. I really am a fan of Jakub Nakladal, who would be a nice cheap depth option with untapped potential. He is older at 28, but was very, very good in his limited appearances with Calgary this year. Probably would not cost much and you could get some very good value out of him.

And another guy who might be entirely off the radar at this point is Cody Hodgson. Yea first round never materialized, we've heard that story, but he actually did well in the limited minutes he got with Nashville.

He wasn't tendered a QO so it is doubtful a team would have to pay much at all to sign him. His ceiling is probably only that of a 3L forward at this point, but you could do a lot worse.
