In this edition of the hotstove we share our thoughts on Alex Killorn's seven-year, $4.45 million (per) contract extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

I like the dollar amount but not the term. Alex Killorn is a pretty solid player but he'll likely begin his decline in the next two or three years (he turns 27 before the upcoming season starts) and he'll be on the books long after that.
The Lightning are tight for cap space and still have to get Nikita Kucherov, Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat and Jonathan Drouin, among others, locked up long-term within the next year.
Without shedding a good amount of cap I don't know how they can accomplish that, which is why I think they'd have been better off allocating that money elsewhere.
Peter Tessier In all fairness I've been away for a bit and out of the loop. For this deal I think it's fair at first blush. The issue is what are teams paying for when they go this far out? He's about to turn 27 in September so with a 7 year does how does he look at age 32 and on?
Killorn is a good player and for the Bolts they avoid arbitration and what could happen after. So now it's about being sure they know what they have for 7 more years- based on this deal the Bolts are confident in their move.
James Tanner It's genius. Killorn is a super underrated player and that's a pretty team-friendly deal. Under Five for what he brings is a solid value move. The only thing that is surprising is that they didn't sign Kucherov first.
