The NHL playoffs got underway last night, and among the most talked about topics was P.K. Subban's controversial slash on Mark Stone.
Some feel Subban should be suspended, while others think a two-minute minor would have done justice.
In this edition of the hotstove we discuss whether or not Subban should be suspended for his slash.
It was definitely a penalty, and I don't have a problem with Subban getting five for it - apparently the refs did call it correctly - but I think giving Ottawa an extended powerplay and the Habs having to play without Subban for over half the game was enough punishment.
Whether anything comes of it remains to be seen, but I don't think the slash warrants any more discipline.
Tim Chiasson Yes, he should be suspended.
I don’t really care if Mark Stone broke his arm, a nail or got a deep bruise. Penalize the act, not the result of the play. The punishment should have nothing to do with how injured a player is. It was a dumb, reckless, play that has no business happening. It wasn’t a friendly whack by a defender to let Stone know he was there or to disrupt a play. Subban choked up on his stick and played whack-a-mole with Stone’s arm. The referee should have issued a match penalty instead of a slashing major. If his intent wasn’t to injure then what, exactly, was it?
That play was the second reckless stick work by Subban. Earlier he negotiated his way out of a high-sticking penalty after batting a Senator in the head. That was a follow through only if his name is Jose Bautista. Subban was a punk for the 9 minutes he played and that slash on Stone should be dealt with by the NHL Department of Player Safety. If it’s not, the Senators should get #74 to have a chat with Subban sans gants.
