Hotstove: Best Free Agent Remaining On The Market? (NHL)

Todd Cordell

For me the best player on the market is Jiri Hudler.

He is not going to move the needle much in terms of possession but he can flat out score.

Over the last three seasons Hudler ranks 13th in assists per 60 minutes of 5 v 5 play and 16th in points per 60 minutes of 5 v 5.

Putting up points in the NHL is harder than ever and Hudler has consistently been very good at it. Considering his asking price in both dollars and term would be pretty reasonable - at least compared to other big name free agents - I think he's someone a lot of teams should be after.

Peter Tessier This one is a bit tough as there is no UFA who is a clear cut favorite over the others. There's not any player who stands out above the others but in this case I think it comes down between Sam Gagner and Brandon Pirri.

I'll be honest I'm age biased and also that they are likely to have a good value if the signing team has looked at how each has had success in the past. Either has the possibility of being a good value but not in any situation- they have to be placed to succeed. While it could be tough to lock them up longer than short term the right team could have a chance to get real value with them if they don't commit too long.
