Flames GM Brad Treliving took care of some housekeeping today in signing center Mikael Backlund to a multi-year contract extension.
The new contract is a three-year deal that will see Backlund carry a $3.575 million cap hit.

On a team that allows way too many shots and scoring chances he's been incredibly good at suppressing them.
As you can see he's not a huge point getter but he will chip in offensively and his work defensively is elite. Bringing him back means the Flames have a capable two-way center who can take some of the pressure off Sean Monahan and co., which allows them to play more favorable minutes in offensive situations.
At 26 years of age he still has plenty of gas left in the tank so a somewhat lengthy contract is not something the Flames should be remotely concerned about.
Brad Treliving and the Flames did very well getting one of the team's better players locked up for the foreseeable future on a very cap friendly contract.
