The Calgary Flames have shocked the hockey world as they've come out of the woodworks and acquired defenseman Dougie Hamilton from the Boston Bruins.
In return the Bruins will receive a package of draft picks including the 15th overall selection in this year's draft.
BREAKING: Bruins acquire 2015 1st round pick (#15) & two 2015 2nd round picks (#45 #52) from CGY for Dougie Hamilton: http://t.co/7TmPoYevOu
— Boston Bruins (@NHLBruins) June 26, 2015The Flames been aggressively working the phone for a while now, and were expected to be active at the draft, but nobody expected this kind of splash.
I'll have much more on this after the dust settles but Dougie Hamilton is exactly what the Flames needed.
Their top guys were being relied upon to play way too many minutes and Hamilton can certainly take a big chunk of the load off the shoulders of Mark Giordano, T.J. Brodie and co.
Hamilton can not only produce offense - he had 42 points in 72 games last season - but he's very good in terms of possession and will surely be a big help to the Flames in that regard.
At 22 years of age he's just coming into his own and there is no doubt in my mind that he could be a Norris Trophy candidate in the not too distant future.
I really like this deal for the Flames.
