Follow @james_tanner123 I used to be critical of movies that couldn't help but give us a happy ending, however, after seeing one of the most corrupt, despicable, villains I've ever seen in real life win in the end, I have to say, I could go for some superficial Hollywood cheese about now.
As we struggle to explain to our kids how the lying, cheating, rude, disrespectful, morally (and financially) bankrupt reality-TV celebrity is now somehow the President (barring a Christmas Miracle) we are also left to (in this ironically unseasonable November) figure out how to care again about such trivialities as hockey.
Cunningham may be a borderline NHLer, but he's one of the most popular and well-respected people in the game. I don't really know what else to say, but here's hoping everything works out.
And it might. I speak my mind and it seems I spend a good portion of everyday speaking out against bullshit or complaining about injustice, but the fact is, I'm a surprisingly optimistic guy. I think hope, even naivety, is one of the best characteristics a person can possess. And I believe the caretakers of America will find a way to prevent Trump from taking office, I hold out hope that Cunningham will recover and, hell, I'll even try to pretend this Coyotes' season isn't already lost.
We just need a Christmas Miracle, or three. (Well, two. I'm not religious, but even I find it offensive when people pray for their sports teams to win.....like, no offense, but I'm pretty sure God has better things to do).
And you know, as crazy as the world seems lately, and as pointless as hockey can seem at times when things get completely F____ed, it is important to remember that now that we don't have to spend all our time hunting, gathering, and defending what we hunted and gathered, we have tons of free time to help us forget that we don't know why we're here, how long or what we're supposed to do while we are.
Best double that shot of rum in the old egg-nog and sit down to watch the Oilers and Coyotes play what is sure to be an exciting game. With OEL and McDavid, it will feature two of the best hockey players in the world and one team will win, another will lose and hopefully we'll be able to forget for several hours that the "President" feels strongly enough about Saturday Night Live that he Tweets about it, but can't find the time to condemn the hate crimes being perpetrated across the country in his name (you know, unless he's actually asked point blank about it, which is not the same thing).
Am I alone in thinking it's insane that the President Tweets? That ain't right man.
I guess I could talk about that Vancouver game from the other night, but I think, like just about everything else in 2016, the less said the better.
Even though I already had my thanksgiving, this year I'm thankful that when vindictive, lying scam artists win, it's usually not for long. I'm thankful for the distraction of hockey and the existence of alcohol.
Everyone on TV is talking about how to make peace with your crazy relatives during the holiday season, and from my perspective, that's pretty boring. If your uncle is a racist, let him know. How else is he gonna learn?
You hear that Uncle Chuck?
Langston Hughes"I Too."
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen When company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong.
Tomorrow, I'll be at the table When company comes. Nobody'll dare Say to me, "Eat in the kitchen," Then.
Besides, They'll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed--
I, too, am America.
Anyways, have a good holiday everyone.
