Caps Sign Goaltender (Washington Capitals)

The Washington Capitals got some veteran insurance on Saturday, signing goaltender Dan Ellis to a one-year, two-way contract.

The move comes on the heels of the Capitals trading away one of their budding prospects in Pheonix Copley to the St. Louis Blues in the deal for T.J. Oshie.

The big question is why the Caps would sign Ellis if they already had Justin Peters for another year. Peters was most likely going to be sent to Hershey before the season started. Perhaps the Capitals feel they want a better veteran presence with Ellis, not to mention his relationship with Barry Trotz and Mitch Korn as a member of the Predators from 20071-10.

The 6'1", 195lbs goaltender had a 4-3-1 record last season with a 2.35 GAA and .914 SP and one shutout all with the Florida Panthers. Ellis, 35, has played in 212 career NHL games with an 87-79-18 record.
