Calgary Flames: MacKinnon, Scheifele Contracts Set Market For Monahan (Flames)

With Nathan MacKinnon and Mark Scheifele putting pen to paper on long-term extensions with their respective teams a market has been set for Sean Monahan's next deal.

MacKinnon, just 20, has averaged more points per game than Monahan throughout his young career and is making a very reasonable $6.3 million per. That's probably a bargain given his ceiling but I can't see Monahan getting any more than that.

Scheifele, 23, has averaged a little less in the points per game department but is coming off an almost identical season to Monahan (two more goals, two less points) and signed for $6.15M per.

These contracts probably don't help Monahan's case in negotiations. There was talk of him getting a matching contract with Johnny Gaudreau, who will likely command more, but that's surely out the window now that close comparables have signed for, give or take, ~6 million per season.

When all is said and done expect Monahan's contract to be in the same range as MacKinnon and Schefiele.

I'm guessing he'll get a hair more than $6 million but less than MacKinnon. We'll find out soon if that's the case.
