The Blue Jackets used their plethora of draft picks to move up into the first round and select Gabriel Carlsson.
He's a big defenseman who moves well and is very responsible defensively. He's smart and and is a capable passer but he's definitely known more so for his defensive game than offensive game.
With the Blue Jackets lacking defense prospects it's not surprising that they set out to address that today by selecting two blue liners in Werenski and Carlsson.

Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen has not hid from the fact he'd like to add a high-end defense prospect to the system - especially with Mike Rielly leaving - and he did just that by selecting Zach Werenski with the 8th overall pick.
Werenski is a 6'2' puck-moving defenseman who tallied nine goals and 25 points in 35 games with the University of Michigan last season.
Those are impressive numbers for a Freshman, especially considering he was the youngest player in all of college hockey.
