Avs could use PPG vs Canes (Avalanche)

The Avalanche (3-5-1) finish their three-game road trip Friday night, taking on Carolina (4-6-0) at the PNC Arena looking to win their second game in a row for the first time this season.

Here are the official notes for the game.

The Avalanche have lost five consecutive games in Raleigh, going 0-3-2 there since a 5-4 win Jan. 12, 2008.

Scoring a power-play goal or two would help. The Avalanche went 0-for-6 with nine shots Thursday in their 2-1 win against Tampa Bay when goalie Semyon Varlamov had to make two saves during Colorado's 5-on-3 power play, including a clean breakaway by Ondrej Palat.

The Avalanche are 1-for-21 on power plays in the past four games, 1-for-19 in four road games and 3-for-33 in the past seven games overall.

Varlamov made 34 saves in all against the Lightning, who outshot the Avalanche 13-5 in the third period and 35-26 for the game. He made 18 saves Oct. 21 in the Avalanche's 1-0 overtime loss to the Hurricanes at the Pepsi Center and has a 4-1-4 career record against them with a 2.04 goals-against average and .926 save percentage.

Coach Patrick Roy changed all four lines for the Lightning game, and the Alex Tanguay-Nathan MacKinnon-Jarome Iginla unit was responsible for both goals and four assists. They combined for 12 shots.

"We all can score, it's a good mix," MacKinnon told reporters after the game. "We seem to mesh pretty well. I thought we controlled the play and were good defensively. Definitely a lot of positives."

Matt Duchene continues to struggle. He had two shots and remains stuck on one goal for the season, which he scored on a power play Oct. 18 in Los Angeles.

Defenseman Francois Beauchemin logged a season-high 27:20 in ice time, blocked five shots and had five hits. Defenseman Nikita Zadorov only played 11:59, but he had three hits and was plus-2.

Like the Avalanche, the Hurricanes played Thursday (defeating the New York Islanders 3-2 in overtime in Brooklyn) and didn't have a morning skate. They've won two games in a row and completed a seven-game road trip 4-3-0.

Cam Ward is expected to start in goal. He made 25 saves Wednesday in the Hurricanes' 3-1 win in Detroit and stopped 26 shots -- including Iginla's overtime breakaway -- in their win against the Avalanche earlier this month. He has a 4-3-1 career record against Colorado with one shutout, a 2.73 goals-against average and .910 save percentage.
