The final curtain dropped on the 2021-22 season for the Philadelphia Flyers as they lost to the Ottawa Senators, 4-2, at the Wells Fargo Center on Friday night. The Flyers finished the season with a 25-46-11 record.
A late first period power play goal by James van Riemsdyk (24th goal of the season) sent the Flyers to intermission with a 1-0 lead. Josh Norris (35th) tied the game at 1-1 at 11:51 of the second period.
Early in the third period, a Travis Hamonic (4th goal of the season) point shot found the net to put Ottawa in the lead, 2-1. A 5-on-3 power play goal by Owen TIppett re-tied the score at 2-2 before a Brady Tkachuk power play goal (30th) provided the winning goal for Ottawa. Auston Watson (10th) tacked on an empty net.
Martin Jones, in a losing cause stopped 32 of 35 shots. Anton Forsberg earned the win with 32 saves on 34 shots.
The Flyers went 2-for-3 on the power play. The Senators went.1-for-4.
With the New Jersey Devils winning on Friday, the 29th-place Flyers cannot pick any lower than 5th in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft and they hold the fourth-highest odds of winning the lottery for the first overall pick. If the Seattle Kraken win both of their remaining games, Dave Hakstol's team will pass the Flyers in the final standings, dropping Philadelphia to 30th (third-highest lottery odds). Anything short of that will lock in the status quo.
