Wrap: Flyers Lose in OT, 5-4, to Penguins

The Philadelphia Flyers were unable to nail down a 4-2 lead in the third period against the Pittsburgh Penguins and went down to a 5-4 overtime defeat at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday evening. Kris Letang (6th goal of the season) netted the game winner on the first shift of the extra frame.

At the 31-second mark of OT, after forcing a Claude Giroux turnover, Letang counter-attacked and scored to end the game. Using Sidney Crosby as a screen, Letang fired a shot through the five-hole on Carter Hart. It was Letang's second OT goal against the Flyers this season.

The Flyers are winless in their last nine games on the road.

Giroux (16th goal of the season) opened the scoring in the third period but the Penguins' Dominik Simon (3rd) got the goal right back. Pittsburgh took a 2-1 lead on their first power play of the game, as Crosby scored the 500th goal of his NHL career and 50th career regular season goal against the Flyers (14th goal of the season) to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead.

Scott Laughton (10th) tied the game at 2-2 early in the second period. Pittsburgh largely took control on subsequent shifts but a Pittburgh turnover was converted moments later into a tally by Nick Seeler (1st goal as a Flyer) as Philly took a 3-2 lead. Justin Braun (4th) got a friendly bounce off a Pittsburgh defender as the Flyers extended the lead to 4-2 late in the middle stanza.

In the middle stages of the third period, a power play goal by Jake Guentzel (25th) and an even strength tally by Chad Ruhwedel (1st) spaced just 18 seconds apart forced overtime.

Hart stopped 29 of 34 shots in a losing effort. Casey DeSmith denied 23 of 27 Flyers shots.

The Flyers went 0-for-4 on the power play. The Penguins went 2-for-4.
