In this edition of the hotstove, we share our picks for the worst goaltending tandem in the NHL.
Todd Cordell
I think the Carolina Hurricanes improved moving on from Cam Ward and signing Petr Mrazek but there still isn't much reason to be confident in their goaltending.
Over the last two seasons, 40 netminders have logged at least 3,000 minutes during 5v5 play.
Scott Darling ranks 37th among them in save percentage while Mrazek is slightly higher at 35th. Neither has performed at even an average level or shown they can put together a string of quality starts.
The hope has to be they can overachieve a little while playing behind a stacked blueline. If not, goaltending will again hold back an otherwise solid Hurricanes team.
Sean Maloughney The Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres went out and got Carter Hutton who had a strong campaign last season while Jake Allen...wasn't. However, it remains to be seen if he can keep it up over a full season. The Sabres have a potential starter in the young Linus Ullmark but potential is the key word there. If neither of these men are able to live up to what is expected of them it could be another long season in Buffalo.
Peter Tessier Hi there Canucks. You went from Luongo and Schneider to this.. really. Sure, it's not your fault at all but this is what you have so you have to own it. Maybe you have some rivals in Carolina and Dallas and Arizona, and Edmonton (depending) and Detroit and others but that fall from arguably one of the best tandems since 2000 to this is your honor to hold as the worst goaltending tandem in the league.
