Wings win 2nd game in 3 days against Vancouver 6-1

Detroit faced Vancouver for the second time after an exciting 5-2 win in Saturday’s match up. Larkin and Berggren both had 2 goal games, with Seider and Chiarot collecting 2 assists.

Game Summary:

The game opened up with Larkin just flying. He had 7 shot attempts, and scored twice in the first. The Wings seemed to have tons of momentum through the first 20, but Vancouver owned the second. Unfortunately, they only had one goal for their effort as they seemed to have a string of power plays. Husso’s goal tending along with a few missed shots combined to shut down the power play.

In the post All Star break, Berggren and Rasmussen seem to have upped the intensity, while Bertuzzi is getting more chances. Vancouver is obviously in the middle of trade talk and have seen Horvat leave town. The team has a lot on their minds that doesn’t have much to do with hockey.

Veleno and Zadina were both skating hard and Seider continues to make some nice blue line plays and block shots. There are a few places where you can see positive growth in this franchise, but that is going to be tested on a rough road trip.

Was a fun win for Detroit, but Vancouver had to feel snake bitten. Missed shots, superb goal tending by Husso, and when Detroit had the momentum, they were very good at cycling and passing the puck in the O zone. Rasmussen on the wing in a depth role this year has certainly helped him along. I don’t think Larkin gets enough credit for how hard he tries to push the momentum and make things happen.

First Period Detroit goals:

Larkin opened the scoring at 10:58 as he took a pass from Seider and made a beautiful play in tight on a breakaway. The Captain started this game just flying into the O zone and was rewarded for his persistence with his 19th of the season.

1-0 Detroit

With 35 seconds left in the period, Larkin gets his second of the game. His energy is fantastic. He got the puck to the net, it ended up on Bertuzzi’s stick behind the net. Bert made a nice pass to Fabbri who found Larkin with his stick on the ice read for a quick tap in.

2-0 Detroit

Shots - 7-7 (Larkin had 7 attempts in just the first) Score - 2-0 Detroit

2nd Period Detroit goals:

VAN got on the board at 1:31. 2-1 Detroit

Fabbri restored the 2 goal lead at 8:09. Seider made several plays to help this one happen. The young Dman got the puck to Copp who found Rasmussen in front of the net. Fabbri literally dove and poked the puck in for his 5th.

3-1 Detroit

Shots: 18-14 VAN Score: 3-1 DET

Third Period Detroit goals:

40 seconds into the third, Lindstrom added to Detroit’s lead as Rasmussen tried to score on the wrap around, then the D man tapped it in. Detroit came out jumping in the third. Assist for Rasmussen. Ras has now matched his career high in points at 27. 4-1 Detroit

At 5:19 Suter and Sundqvist found themselves on a 2 man break away. Sundqvist feathered a pass for a tap in by Suter. Lindstrom with 2nd assist. 5-1 Detroit

Berggren found a quiet spot on the ice, glove side. Detroit had an extra man due to a delayed penalty. Veleno has been skating really well, got the puck to Berggren after a pass from Hronek. 6-1 Detroit

With a minute to go, Vancouver was given a penalty shot as Husso intentionally dislodged the net. DiGuiseppe took the shot and hit a goal post. That’s pretty much how things have gone for Vancouver tonight. Brutal for home team.
