Wings get friendly bounces in crazy 7-5 win over Jets

Game Summary: Mo Seider got 4 assists tonight. Not bad for a 22 year old. His assist on Larkin’s 5 on 3 was really nice after he turned the puck over but was able to recover. He seems to be able to keep the puck in the zone so much more consistently than what we’ve had during the “rebuild….

Copp is finding his game, Fabbri brings something special to the ice as well. Bert didn’t kick in tonight, but he’s been on a long road to recovery. Walman just seems to have more and more confidence and is skating really well at times.

If I’m going to be totally honest, this is part of what make hockey a tough sport. The Jets outshot and outworked Detroit (shots were 37-23 Jets) and Detroit scored 7 to Winnipeg’s 5 (one was an empty net). Neither goalie had a stellar save percentage, but both had some fantastic saves. In all fairness, I could see why Winnipeg would feel that they played better than the result.

Still, a win is a win. Special teams played a part, and Detroit was ready at the start of the game. You could see lull’s as the Jet’s would trap Detroit in their own end, but that start is a big part of the outcome.

I’ve said many times that there are two things that make this game so unique. Goalies and momentum. You can watch and feel the shift in energy (or feel the ice tilt as some say) and a goalie can stop what looks to be a sure goal. This game was a couple bounces and goal posts from a different outcome.

The team, more than anything, never quit. Veleno is skating hard, Berggren is too. Copp seems to be finding his place on the roster more and more. Sundqvist made some good hard plays, one leading to a Kubalik goal on a 2 on 1. It’s almost like watching an old family slide show (assuming most of you know what that is). We would have them a few times of year. Some shots were fantastic, and some were embarrassing that you wish would just go away. My Step dad was at the controls and he could be just wicked throwing in the one shot you wish he wouldn’t.

The glimpses will get better, and have more longevity. Yzerman has done so much since the summer of 2019 and seems to be fearless in terms of keeping a structure in place even if it means losing out on a free agent (if you remember Stamkos hit the market before he eventually extended with Tampa). This brings the topic du jour. Larkin.

There is plenty of “click bait… about Detroit being careless with this extension. Yzerman’s deals seem to come out of nowhere, and I am certain there is plenty behind the scenes going on. He held off on naming Larkin captain to watch him as a person and player for a season. Larkin loves this team. Anything can happen, but I feel like the deal will get done.

Believe it or not, in just a couple months I’ll be asking for your draft predictions and we’ll probably see a trade or two before the deadline (even if it’s just a money retainer). I love the atmosphere of LCA after a win. This is the best energy the crowd has had since the new arena opened.

Let me know who stood out to you. I would have liked to see a couple of passes be shots on net instead, but that will always be the case. That game is so much faster in person than what we see on tv. I like Walman and Seider together, they seem to click well. Hronek is getting some of his confidence back.

A post season spot isn’t necessarily the goal yet, but finishing well is for sure. We’ll see how this second half pans out and how the pressure of playing teams vying for post season spots affects the current roster.

First Period Detroit goals:

Walman continues to impress as he scored just 1:16 into the first. Showed some impressive skating and carried the puck between the dots and wristed a beauty. Seider and Copp with assists.

At 7:31 Berggren doubled the lead after a nice backhand pass by Copp. Both players seem to be growing and finding their game in Detroit. Seider the other assist again.

Sundqvist roofed a beauty at 15:27. Seider with his 3rd assist of the night already. Raymond with other assist.

Jet’s get on the board with 2:43 left to play. 3-1

Shots: 8-7 DET Score: 3-1 DET

Second Period Detroit goals:

Sundqvist continues to impress as he won a D zone puck battle and created a 2 on 1, passing to Kubalik at the net front as the former ‘Hawk scored his 13th of the season. 4-1

Near the 10 minute mark Jets get their 2nd. 4-2

Jets score again just about 2 minutes later. 4-3

At 17:38 on a 2 man advantage Seider, after a bad giveaway, made a few good plays (and several good keep ins earlier) and got the puck to Larkin who added one back to the lead. 5-3 Raymond with other assist, Seider now with 4 points.

Shots: 24-27 Jets Score: 5-3 Detroit

Third Period Detroit goals:

It took 33 seconds for Jets to make it a 1 goal game again. 5-4

Less than 2 minutes later Fabbri got that goal back after a huge block by Hronek changed the course of action. Lindstrom and Veleno with assists.

With 5:05 the Jets score on the power play, 6-5

With 1:20 left Raymond restored the 2 goal lead on an empty net goal after Larkin skated the puck out of the D zone and found the young winger.
