Game Summary:
Detroit had a first period that saw Larkin and Berggren both score. Both players had 2 goal games, and it was a breath of fresh air. Several times during the 2nd and 3rd period it seemed like Vancouver was able to lock Detroit in their own zone, but between Husso’s plays, shot blocking and a little bit of good fortune Detroit came up big with 5 goals to Vancouver’s 2.
Berggren has been a nice surprise. The season started with the organization disappointed in his development, but thanks to injury the young Swede has made an impact on the team and fans alike.
An odd high spot was Hronek tripping up a Vancouver player on a breakaway which led to a penalty shot. Hughes did everything but score on that one. Hronek made up for the stress of the situation by netting one of his own.
A 2 point night for Seider, Chiarot and Berggren and a 3 point night for the captain all came together for a much needed win before the long trek to the west. Detroit will see Vancouver again Monday, as well as facing Calgary and Edmonton again before their trip to Seattle.
Rasmussen continues to grow as he literally shielded the puck with 2 Vancouver players on top of him. Though he’s been moved to the wing, the big man has done everything he can to change his game and be part of this team.
On days like this you get a glimpse of what Yzerman is building. There are still a lot of pieces needed, but a win worth celebrating to be sure.
First Period Detroit goals:
Larkin opened the scoring just 1:08 in as Seider got a puck on net from the right side blue line, Larkin was near the left side circle and capitalized on the rebound. Chiarot with 2nd assist.

Just 1 minute and 27 seconds later Berggren doubled the lead with his 9th of the season. This time it was Chiarot who shot intentionally wide of the net as Berggren tipped the puck into the Vancouver net. Seider with another assist. 2 point day for both D men.

2nd Period:
Van pulls within 1 just 2 minutes in on a power play goal. For a good stretch Detroit couldn’t get their hands on the puck as Vancouver kept the Wings hemmed into their own zone.
Larkin helped the team regain the 2 goal lead 13:17 into the 2nd on the power play. Larkin’s 18th of the year, assists by Fabbri and Perron. Larkin found himself all alone on the left side and lifted the puck over a sprawling Vancouver Dman. Hard work from Bertuzzi helped keep things going.

3rd Period:
Vancouver got a penalty shot 1:38 into the 3rd. Hughes had Husso beat cleanly but lost the puck. Still 3-1 Wings
36 seconds later, Hronek (who had caused the shootout to happen) scored with a nice shot from the blue line. Maata and Rasmussen with assists. 4-1 Detroit

At 9:05 Berggren gets his 10th of the year on the power play after some nice play in the zone by Larkin and Bertuzzi who both collected assists on the play.
