Which goaltender should the San Jose Sharks start in the playoffs? (Sharks)

In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on which goaltender the San Jose Sharks should start come playoff time.

Todd Cordell

The Sharks have given Martin Jones every opportunity to right the ship, which is defensible given how much they invested in him, but I think they should give Aaron Dell the first chance when the games really count. It's not like he's been a world beater this season – he hasn't – but he owns a .908 save percentage at 5v5 while Jones sits at .897. That's dead last among 60 eligible goaltenders (750+ minutes).

Dell posting better numbers than Jones at 5v5, where most of every game is played, is nothing new. He's done it for three years now.

Though Dell hasn't been lights out, Jones has fared even worse and his struggles have almost certainly cost the Sharks a real shot at winning the Pacific. I'd give Dell a shot.

Peter Tessier The goalie that should start is the one the Sharks did no acquire for insurance at the trade deadline. Let's be honest here- this situation was coming and the Sharks knew it and totally blew it but not finding someone at the deadline.

So between Dell and Jones you have to look at who has played Vegas better and start that guy first. This is a bit like the argument last year with Grubauer and Holtby with Washington. They managed to deal with it but not without some controversy and luck.

So start the one playing best and see what happens because regardless the Sharks are going to need luck to get anywhere with either of them this post-season.
