Apart from the holiday season, one of the most anticipated late December events every year is the World Junior Championships. By far it's my favorite non-NHL event on the yearly hockey calendar. Apologies to readers (primarily in Europe) who love the World Championships but, in my opinion, it doesn't hold a candle to the WJC despite the frequent presence of NHL stars and other top pro players. I'd also take the WJC in a heartbeat over an Olympics without NHL players.
