In this edition of the hotstove, we share our picks for the worst forward group in the NHL.
Todd Cordell
The Detroit Red Wings. They don't have much – or any – true star power. There certainly isn't enough quality depth to make up for it.
Their forward core was not exactly great to begin with and it continues to take hits. Late last season they traded Tomas Tatar for draft picks – rightfully so given the haul – and now it looks like they'll lose Henrik Zetterberg to injury/not wanting to play the final three years of his deal for $5.35 million total.
Anthony Mantha is a quality winger, Dylan Larkin is solid, although a little overrated, Gustav Nyquist is a consistent 40+ point guy and Andreas Athanasiou has shown flashes. They don't have much of worth beyond that.
The Red Wings really need Filip Zadina to be as good as advertised because they're really hurting up front.
Peter Tessier The Canucks?
It's not that they are bad players but as a group who stands out? Horvat, Boesser and? It's like the team is a thrown together miss mash of guys that the team is hoping fits together. Is there anyone worse? Buffalo maybe. Not even Arizona takes this one for being bad.
James Tanner The worst forward group in the NHL is the Detroit Red Wings. This once proud franchise is now completely terrible and almost devoid of talent. Dyland Larkin and Anthony Mantha are solid players, but they aren't high-end talent. Their depth chart lists Tomas Vanek as their first left winger. He's 34. Gustav Nyquist? Abdelkader? Neilsen? Those four guys are all looking playing top six. I don't think anyone else in the NHL is close to this bad.
