In this edition of the hotstove, we share our picks for the worst defense core in the NHL.
Todd Cordell
Detroit and I'm not sure it's remotely close.
The Red Wings' defense is old, immobile, inept offensively, and not exactly stout on the defensive side of things. Mike Green is the best defenseman on the roster and he's probably a fringe top-4 guy at this point in his career. There isn't really anything of worth on their blueline right now and I'm not sure that can be said of another team in the NHL. Almost every defender they have is old, overpaid, or a combination of the two.
I'm pretty optimistic about Filip Hronek's future but I don't think there is any other defenseman in the system who is all that close to making an impact.
Peter Tessier Well, this is tough because it's like a three-way race to be brutal. The first two that strike me as being in the 'brutal' category are Detroit and Chicago. Both teams are old, lacking in talent and trying to ride on the legacy of past greatness. Now if the Sabres had not landed Dhalin they would be the final team on the list of three but him alone could take them out of the doldrums. You could also give an honorable mention to the Islanders too- yeesh
