In the midst of all the buzz, a bit of a head scratcher continues to hover around Detroit. Jakub Vrana seems to be in a bizarre limbo. The reference to “Wally World… goes back to a vintage Chevy Chase movie (is that thing 40 by now?). In short, a horrible family vacation seems to finally get on track as the Griswald clan gets to their destination after a lot of driving. And, the park was closed. The destination and the redeeming feature of the comedy of errors was completely unavailable. The family does gain entrance, but in a way and a movie that could probably never be made again. Times change, and some of the 80s (or much of) entertainment would probably get you fired as a producer or an actor.
Vrana has gone through a wringer that we can only speculate on this year. A promising year gone, a player waived and news reports that his time with Detroit was “done…. Then, a call up for a road trip. Sure bridges were mending or at least Vrana was getting showcased. Instead, he sat and watched 4 games. The plus of course is the pay bump and practices with NHL teammates. Still, this felt a little cruel.
In his interview he talks a little about “possibly… playing in Washington tomorrow. Vrana had some sort of office meeting and is doing his best to say and do all the right things. On the outside, a lot of common sense seems to be out the window on this one.
All I can turn to is modified proverbs. “The knowledge you possess is to your credit. The knowledge you think you possess is to your destruction…. Many fans of this sport are number machines. We put together lines, teams, careers, predictions and everyone has a slightly different method. Baseball fans are even more so. On the outside the answers are so simple. For whatever reason the “behind the scenes… is a great deal more complex. And, until a decision is fully made Yzerman doesn’t make a press announcement.
So Vrana (and more than a couple fans) sit in hockey-limbo. Posts (like this) will speculate or shrug. It’s at least worth a mention that this player is there and feels ready to hit the ice. Everything else will be speculation for now. Plan in place, punishment?
