Semyon Varlamov has a groin injury and didn't practice Tuesday, so Calvin Pickard will start in goal Wednesday when the Avalanche play Philadelphia at the Pepsi Center to begin a two-game homestand.
Spencer Martin will be recalled from San Antonio to suit up as Pickard's backup.
Coach Jared Bednar said Varlamov "tweaked his groin" and is day to day. "I don't think it's anything major, but he'll miss tomorrow's game," he said.
Varlamov, who made 51 saves Sunday in the Avalanche's 3-1 win in Toronto, has had groin injuries in the past that have kept him sidelined for significant time.
"I'm hopeful that it's not (serious)," Bednar said. "Apparently he's feeling better today than yesterday. I'm hopeful it's going to be shorter than what he's had in the past."
Forwards Joe Colborne (lower-body injury) and Carl Soderberg (ill) also missed practice.
The Avalanche (11-15-1) will be facing a Flyers team that has won nine games in a row, not the easiest team to play under any circumstances, let alone at home, where wins have been all too rare.
While 7-7-0 on the road after winning two of the final three games on the just-completed four-game trip, the Avalanche are 4-8-1 at home and went 0-4-1 on the most recent homestand.
"We've got to find a way to scrape up some points on home ice," captain Gabriel Landeskog said. "This hasn't been good enough so far and it's not going to be good enough if we keep this going. I think we showed a lot of urgency in Toronto (after Saturday's 10-1 blowout in Montreal) and a lot of character from the whole group, and that's something we need on home ice.
"We need to come out a little pissed off, and I think that's what we're going to look to do tomorrow. (It's been) a lack of urgency, really. We come out sometimes flat, and there's no excuse for that. We have to come out and have some energy and urgency, a little bit of punch-first mentality, get a little pissed off and take control of the game.
"You watch some of the games, especially when I was hurt, and it's almost like we're waiting for the game to start instead of taking charge of it. If we get a power play in the first 10 minutes we have to create momentum, create a buzz off of that." The Flyers (18-10-3) are 7-5-1 on the road. Rookie goalie Anthony Stolarz made 28 saves Sunday in a 1-0 overtime win in Detroit when they opened a three-game road trip. They've outscored teams 32-19 during the nine-game streak, the fourth-longest in franchise history.
