Toffoli Dealt to Devils for Sharangovich and 2023 Third Round Pick (Flames)

The Calgary Flames leading scorer of 2022-2023 has been dealt today for Yegor Sharangovich and their original third round pick that was previously dealt for Calle Jarnkrok.

It’s not difficult to paint this trade as a horrible move.

The 31 year old Toffoli notched 34 goals and 73 points over 82 games. Sharangovich, 25, is a restricted free agent coming off a two year contract that averaged $2,000,000 per season. The 6’2…, 196lbs all-position forward had 13 goals and 30 points last season.

The previous season, Sharangovich recorded 24 goals and 46 points. He certainly can produce more, but the 2021-2022 season involved so many injuries through the roster — the Flames would have to have very limited roster options to put the Belarus native in the amount of offensive situations that he was deployed in that year.

This is questionable asset management at best. Dealing Toffoli at the deadline would have easily brought back a greater return. Particularly if the Flames were to retain salary. The Flames will end up with an absolutely paltry amount of assets if they make trades like this involving Zadorov, Tanev, Lindholm, and Backlund. Downgrading to younger players that any decent team couldn’t even justify cap room for is no way to stay competitive.

So the Flames get a younger, RFA controlled player. Sharangovich will continue to develop — He’s only entering his fourth NHL season in 2023-2024.

How do you feel about the trade?
