…‹In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on J.T. Miller's five-year, $5.25 million (per) extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning. …‹ Todd Cordell
Over the last three years, J.T. Miller has averaged more 5v5 points per 60 than the likes of Tyler Seguin, Cam Atkinson, Claude Giroux, Patrice Bergeron, Logan Couture and Jonathan Toews, among many others. His raw totals are impressive as well.
Clearly, he's a solid producer at 5v5. He can score goals. He's versatile. He's physical. His relative possession numbers have been positive in three of the last four years, too.
I don't know that Miller will out-perform his contract but he's a solid player locked up through the prime of his career. I doubt this will come back to haunt the Lightning.
Both sides should be fairly happy with this deal.
Adam French I think it's a fine deal. Not great, not bad. Miller performed quite well next to Kucherov and Stamkos...but then again, the guy they replaced on that line also put up quality numbers with them. They're definitely banking on the ability to put up 60-70 points next year.
Miller's a frustrating player in terms of his consistency, but is obviously a top-6 winger on the vast majority of NHL rosters. Though his playoff production (even going back to the OHL) has been very worrying as Rangers fans will tell you. Back to back 50+ point campaigns. Three 20+ goal campaigns and he's only 25 so this deal will likely age well as the Cap goes up.
Solid deal for both sides. Now to get rid of that boat anchor Callahan and all should be well in Tampa.
