In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on Patrik Berglund's five-year extension worth an average of $3.85 million per season.

Berglund is a good player. He is solid defensively and usually chips in 10-15 goals a year. In saying that, I don't like this deal.
Berglund will be 29 years old, and exiting the prime of his career, by the time the extension begins. Committing five years to a guy whose best days are behind him usually isn't a good idea. Committing five years to depth guys doesn't often end well, either.
The price is fine, Berglund is a fine, the length of the contract is not.
Peter Tessier 10-15 goals are year are now 3 million plus players. It's not a bad deal it's just not a great deal. If you are the Blues you gets know. Entity that brings you stability at a reasonable rate. That's the real win here for the Blues. It's the same thing for Berglund too, 5 years takes him to age 33 and at a decent salary.
This deal is not moving the needle for the Blues towards being a better team but it's likely not hurting them either. If you don't want your team making conservative deals then you probably are having issues with his one.
