Thompson’s Trick part of Buffalo treat as Wings get smoked 8-3 (Red Wings)

Game Summary: Buffalo had 30 more shots than Detroit. That’s bad enough. Tage Thompson had a huge night, possibly enough to be the 1st star next week in the league.

When you watch Detroit right now, there is no knowing what team is going to show up. More variations in effort than they have in jerseys on the video game. If you have a colonoscopy set for tomorrow, don’t bother with the fleet. Just watch the third period on loop.

Maybe that’s too harsh. Maybe it’s not harsh enough. Buffalo has some really good players and things look bright. But, we’ve said that before at the beginning of the season. Regardless, Detroit went from an intense game against MN to a roll over “Maybe atomic wings aren’t a good pregame meal… type effort.

To be fair, MN outplayed Detroit in the 3rd but the Wings hung in there. Buffalo decimated this team. They weren’t ready to start (seems to happen too often). And they maybe played 2 periods. Also happens too often. New system, yes. New roster and important players hurt, yes. Reasonable results? Not even close. Play the game. We’re still in the first 10. These kind of awful results are usually easier to digest during the doldrums of around the 50 to 60 game mark.

I don’t have answers. The team Yzerman built isn’t out there due to several issues. But, playing bingo in the 3rd turned out to be a bad idea (shocker). It’s not a strategy I’m ever a huge fan of. Shorten the lines, but keep the lines consistent.

It could be a very long season. Yzerman never sleeps, so I expect there will at least be conversations and possibly some I-96 swaps. Rasmussen is back off suspension (I’m not saying that as a huge positive, I’m just stating fact) so changes will be made somewhere. We need a 2nd top 6 center. Don’t sell the farm, but there may be a deal that could be made.

I kept the porch light off tonight so I could give my full attention to this. Maybe I just should have dropped the $50 and bought full size bars and been a neighborhood hero this year. Regardless, I’m sure it’s going to be a rough plane ride.

First Period Detroit Goals: No fist period goals for Detroit, Buffalo scored the games lone tally courtesy of a beautiful one timer by Thompson

Second Period Detroit Goals: Just about 1:30 into the second Maata got Detroit on the board with his 2nd of the season to tie the score 1-1 on what was only 7th shot (compared to 14 for Buffalo) of the game. Copp got the puck to Maata at the blue line (Hronek on 2nd assist) while Perron managed a penalty free screen that certainly seemed to help a good deal.

Just 4 minutes later Sabres regained the lead

With 5:34 left in the second Detroit’s Seider coughed up the puck which eventually went to Skinner (also #53) and he scored his 300th career and 3rd of Buffalo’s night. 3-1 Sabres

With 1:30 left in the second Thompson got his 4th point of the night (2 and 2). This is a rough watch

With 57 seconds left, number 57 (Perron) scored an angry goal at point blank after Veleno made a really nice back hand pass from nearly behind the net. (Seider on 2nd assist). 4-2

Third Period Detroit Goals:

At 4:19 Larkin scored a short handed goal on a pass attempt gone bad. The puck bounced to Larkin and he shot it in for his 5th of the year. Wings now within 1 being outshot 37-16.

Dahlin restores 2 goal lead with 7:07 left on a 5 hole shot that may have been deflected by Wings D. Another point for Thompson.

Cozens makes it back to a 3 goal lead with 5:13 left. An absolute top corner rip. Finally one that Thompson didn’t get a point for.

Buffalo outshooting Detroit 42 to 17 with 4:17 left.

Thompson gets the hat trick, his 6th point, and Detroit

Asplund makes it 8-3 with 38 seconds left. Shots 47-17
