The Penguins have made it official they will be starting their own streaming service

SportsNet Pittsburgh, a regional sports network owned by the Penguins, will be the home of Pens hockey for all regionally televised games.

The Penguins entered into an agreement to acquire and re-brand the existing AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh (ATTSNP) network, effective October 2. SportsNet Pittsburgh (SNP) will be owned by the Penguins, following an agreement to acquire the network from Warner Bros. Discovery, with daily operations managed by New England Sports Network (NESN), an affiliate of Penguins' ownership, Fenway Sports Group. Fans will be able to continue watching games seamlessly on their favorite cable, satellite or streaming provider.SportsNet Pittsburgh will continue to operate out of its North Shore studios. Further details, including full broadcast coverage information, will be revealed at a later date.
It appears as though fans will still be able to watch the Penguins locally with their cable providers and cord cutters will be able to use the app. This is likely to look and feel like NESN’s other streaming platform, NESN 360.
It is a smart move by FSG as cable is becoming more and more obsolete. With the state of regional sports networks shuttering more and more teams are going to take up this approach. Will it be cost effective? Probably not because when has watching your favorite sports team ever been cost effective?
The pricing details were left out of the release. NESN 360 is $30 per month, but comes with both Red Sox and Bruins coverage. To this point the Pirates don’t appear to be included (insert jokes about Pirates here) with this service.
