Ten Things Included in Every Senators Game this Season (Senators)

Last night’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers had so many familiar features of games for the 2018-19 Ottawa Senators. It seems like there is a lot of overlap in every game, and I thought of ten things that are included every time the Senators play:

1. A Thomas Chabot highlight reel

It might not be a goal, but man, he has been impressive every single game so far. He’s consistently doing so many things well on the ice in regards to point production but also with other things:

Chaboi is here and he is ready to supply all of the content for the Sportcentre Top 10.

2. Three goals against in quick succession

Wait a second, it was just 2-1 Ottawa six minutes ago and now...they’re down 4-2? How...what, how did that happen? Ottawa just decided to take 5-10 minutes off from playing defense, and then they hang Craig Anderson/Mike McKenna/Mike Condon out to dry as they flop all over the ice. Hopes of winning these games get dashed so quickly by being horrendously bad defensively for a certain amount of time.

3. Brady Tkachuk gets a point

Tkachuk now has 16 points in 14 games, putting him second in the Calder scoring race, and actually first in points per game (1.14 to Elias Pettersson’s 1.00). He already has more goals (9) than he had all of last season at Boston University in 40 games. If I’m ever unable to watch a game and I’m checking the scoresheet, I expect Tkachuk’s name to be on there because he has been so good. It’s all working out swimmingly for Brady so far, and that’s reason to celebrate:

4. People on Twitter saying “this is a fun team…

This is what happens when the team is third in goals for per game and also last (by a country mile) in goals against per game. Nobody expected the Senators to be good at all this season, so a 6-4 loss is just going to be described as a “fun game… rather than a disappointing loss. Ottawa certainly is a fun team and it’s been great getting to watch a lot of standout performances so far.

And without fail, there are always going to be at least a few mentions on Twitter about how fun of a team they are. I just think it’s funny how the same things like this are said after every single game as if it’s a surprise each time.

5. 35+ shots against

“Over 50 shots against in a game isn’t possible right?… I’ve found myself saying twice already. Here’s my advice to everybody: don’t look at the shot totals from every game because you’ll be looking at the crime scene of a murder. Poor Craig Anderson gets stuck in the net almost every single game and has to face an average of 38.3 shots per game...

It’s considered a massive accomplishment if the shot total is under 30 (which has happened twice), meanwhile, seven teams are averaging under 30 per game.

6. Craig Anderson looking literally dead

Speaking of a murder scene, I’m shocked that Anderson hasn’t been pronounced dead during any of these games. He has faced 115 more shots than the next closest goalie, plus he’s also not exactly a spring chicken at the age of 37. Without fail, there will be a stretch of shifts where the opponent has dominant shift after dominant shift, and at the end of it, this perfectly encapsulates the situation:

I just hope that the team doctors are well-trained enough to recognize if a goaltender is officially dead while on the ice.

7. Mark Stone Faceâ„¢

Stone will do something amazing and everybody will all applaud him and pray to the heavens that he will not be another star player to leave Ottawa. But then the best part about the play isn’t the play itself...it’s the Stone Faceâ„¢ that results from it:

8. Cody Ceci does a bad thing

Just search “Cody Ceci… on Twitter. It’s not a pretty sight. You can guarantee that he is going to make a mistake in every game this season (as will most players), and rightly or wrongly, he will get crucified for it. Most of the time the criticism is well deserved because these mistakes are incredibly common. I just feel like I see plays like this more often than I should from a supposed top defensman:

With how much ice time he gets every game, Ceci has a high chance of doing something bad once a night.

9. Tom Pyatt’s line stuck in their zone for an entire shift

You were watching the game, took a phone call upstairs for a minute and a half, came back down, and look: Tom Pyatt is on the ice again? No hold on, he’s still on the same shift. In fact, his whole line has been hemmed in their own zone for two minutes as if it’s a penalty kill. I think Guy Boucher needs to remind them that not every shift is short-handed and that even strength is a thing that exists. Considering he's supposed to be good in his own zone, he hasn't exactly excelled at getting the puck out of said zone.

10. Matt Duchene’s eyes turn into dollar signs

I mean, come on, what kind of sorcery is this?

Duchene is up to 31 points in 25 games, and with every point he gets, his asking price on his new contract goes up. He’s been as good as you could hope for this season, and every game I can see his eyes slowly morph into dollar signs, getting excited about his big (well-timed) payday.
