Super Boyle Sunday (Penguins)

Lost in the shuffle of Super Bowl Sunday the Penguins and Devils played a matinee. The game started slow on the scoring front with only a goal from each team through the first two periods. The third period had more action and that wasn’t a good thing for the Devils. Pittsburgh put up three third period goals to seal the victory and are now the current placeholder for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Brian Boyle, Bryan Rust, and Mike Matheson led the way with a goal and an assist each. Sidney Crosby didn’t get his 500th goal, but he did pick up two more assists and now has 44 points in 37 games.

Boyle picked off an ill-fated breakout pass up the middle and took a shot which created the time and space for the puck to come back up to Mike Matheson. Matheson leaned into one of the best things he does and that is shoot the puck.

Boyle contributed some solid penalty killing in the second period and went on to score a goal of his own in the third period

It was a good night for the Penguins fourth line center.

Bryan Rust keeps cooking

At one point this year things weren’t looking good for him in his contract year. That is no longer the case. He is guaranteed to cash out. The only question is will it be with Pittsburgh or somewhere else.

The Penguins finish their road trip 3-0 and will return home to face the Flyers. It seems a good a time as any for Crosby to get his 500th goal. I will be surprised if he doesn’t. Crosby loves numbers and superstitions and such. Things are lining up

And it is the Flyers so no more extra motivation needed.
