Somebody get Jim Rutherford a towel. He’s vomited on himself for the second consecutive summer. In amazingly foolish fashion he traded a quality depth player today below value to clear cap space and then went and made the team worse.
.@MarkMaddenX first reported that the Penguins intend to sign defenseman Jack Johnson Sunday to a five-year deal. Confirming that. Source says it will be in the $16 million range total (between $3-$3.5 million AAV).

Brutal. He’s the defensive version of Brandon Sutter which includes the person who drafted them.
Save me the Justin Schultz comparisons. Jack Johnson is 31 and has played on teams that were good. Justin Schultz was in his mid-twenties and was in the most dysfunctional NHL organization at the time.
That Conor Sheary trade doesn’t look so good anymore. The team got worse and gave away a player below market value to do it. There is no logic to using the cap space this way. We have over a decade of advanced stats to peruse through. This is from my blog the other day
Did you also know he stinks at hockey? He's 31 and if anything his past sample tells us it's that he was real bad and played alot. There have been 57 defensemen who have played 10,000 minutes since 2007-08 and Jack Johnson is one of them. He ranks 57th in relative corsi at -3.95% (raw 47.4% 55th overall). He is also dead last in his relative xGF% at -3.88% (raw 47.4% is 54th overal). He ranks 49th with a 5v5 points per 60 at 0.58. He can't drive play, he can't defend, and he gives you minimal offense. What's the draw? It must be that he will come cheap...
Good luck with that one, Sergei “defense whisperer… Gonchar.
Some people are going to pull muscles as they appeal to authority in the wake of criticizing this GM for this move and last offseason. Hope you have your Icy Hot ready. Also, if possible get a cleaning service on the phone for the vomit.
