Should the Salary Cap Include a Luxury Tax or Franchise Player? Wed's Buzz (NHL Rumors)

The NHL loves the fact that so many teams are competitive and believes that the NHL salary cap is the reason.

They feel that if ANY changes were made to the current system the balance of power would shift drastically. I don't believe so. This is a sport where it has been proven time and time again it is NOT the stars who are leading the charge. This is a team sport that has star players, but as for buying a Championship? It won't happen. And it didn't even happen in the days before the salary cap...

And yet the Cap where it currently sits...is a disaster....and the fact it is so low right now is dangerous because not only are we looking at teams not having enough money to retain their current players, but the NHLPA is growing more and more anxious....And that could be leading towards a work stoppage that should never occur with all the success the NHL is enjoying.

I am continually baffled that the NHL doesn't learn from other leagues with salary caps. Why don't we have a luxury tax for going over the cap, or franchise/transitional tags to allow teams a little more flexibility?
