Shootout mismatch downs Penguins (Penguins)

The Chicago Blackhawks have now won two straight after canning Jeremy Colliton beating the Pittsburgh Penguins by a score of 3-2 via shootout last night. The Penguins are struggling as far as earning standings points even if they are playing respectable given their situation

They are definitely playing OK they out attempted the Blackhawks 32-6 at 5v5 in the third period. They out attempted Chicago 70-30 in regulation at 5v5. You really can’t ask for much more than that.

Jeff Carter’s two goals in the third period salvaged a point in the standings and pushed him into the top 100 goal scorers of all-time. He sits 98th overall at 402 goals. Both goals were classic go hard to the net and get a stick on it kind of plays.

The second one barely counted, but barely is good enough. Shout out to Bryan Rust for his pass in the neutral zone to spring both Guentzel and Carter for the opportunity

Carter also dialed back the clock to revive his rivalry against Marc-Andre Fleury. He slashed Fleury’s glove in overtime and Fleury gave it back. They both earned minor penalties. If there’s one Penguins Fleury isn’t going to be fond of it is definitely Carter.

Guentzel is picking things up as of late. He had two primary assists against Chicago. He has two goals and two assists in the last three games.

Tristan Jarry played well during the real hockey portion of things, but the shootout… yeah he’s really bad at it and it has cost the Penguins standings points.

Mike Matheson has what should be a good skill set for 3v3 overtime. His decision making… leaves a lot to be desired. He was careless multiple times and it almost cost the team the game.

Things aren’t going to get easier for the Penguins. They have to face the top team in the NHL on Thursday night in the 10-2-1 Florida Panthers.
