The San Jose Sharks dropped the first game of their three-game homestand on Thursday, falling 7-4 to the Detroit Red Wings.

Detroit drew even in once again in the second period though, with Dylan Larkin’s shot redirecting in off David Perron’s skate. Then later in the frame, Jake Walman wired a shot from the point that blew past Reimer, putting the Red Wings ahead.

Joe Veleno then doubled the lead for the Red Wings five minutes into the third period, scoring off a wraparound, after Detroit already had some other quality chances in the frame. The Sharks did battle back though, first with Logan Couture burying a rebound in-close. Then only a few minutes after that the Sharks managed to tie it, as Karlsson made a move to shake off an opponent, then picked a corner with a nice shot.

However, the Red Wings re-took the lead a couple minutes later, with Moritz Seider beating Reimer with a short-side shot. Things didn’t get better after that, as Reimer lost a race to a loose puck and ended up unsuccessfully diving at it, with Pius Suter just going around him and scoring on the empty net. Dominik Kubalik added an empty netter after that, leading to a 7-4 win for Detroit.

Despite giving up seven goals, the Sharks only actually surrendered 21 shots. That said, there were a lot of rush chances allowed and the actual quality of a lot of those shots given up was quite high.

It’s a rough way for the Sharks to begin the homestand, given they’re coming off a really positive road trip and a win over a good team. They were competitive in the loss but they gave up too many quality chances and Reimer wasn’t good enough to get the win.

Erik Karlsson did continue his early season dominance though, scoring a goal and four points in the loss. Karlsson now sits at 11 goals and 28 points in 19 games.

The Sharks are back in action tomorrow, when they face the New York Rangers.
