Sharks acquire Jake Walman from Red Wings (Sharks)

The San Jose Sharks announced yesterday that they’ve acquired defensemen Jake Walman from the Detroit Red Wings, in addition to the 53rd overall pick in this year’s NHL Draft.

All signs point to this trade being a slam dunk for the Sharks. Walman has been a fairly decent part of Detroit’s blue line, and bringing him in to add a bit of stability to the left side is a nice move. Mario Ferraro has been tasked with far too large of a role in recent years, and hopefully Walman can help to offset that.

But then the Sharks also getting a second-round pick just for taking the contract is… puzzling. This would already be a good trade if the Sharks had taken a player on a bad contract for the pick, but for those assets to come attached to a really serviceable defender is nothing short of a clear win for San Jose.

Detroit may be trying to clear cap space, but the Sharks were able to capitalize as a result, and Walman should be a good addition to the blue line.
