The Winnipeg Jets, fittingly, are in Arizona tonight to take on the Coyotes in a game that will follow the ceremony retiring Shane Doan's number 19.
Doan was drafted by the Jets, seventh overall, in 1995. He played his rookie year in Winnipeg and then the franchise moved to Arizona, where Shane Doan spent his entire career.
No one to this day can explain why an owner would leave a hockey mecca like Winnipeg to move a team to a literal desert, not even Robert Stack.
The thing is though, Shane Doan, beloved though he is, was never all that good. He scored 30 goals just twice, and his 31 goals in 08-09 were a career high. Still, considering all the problems the Coyotes franchise has faced, having a player who wants to actually be there goes a long way.
So no one else will ever wear the #19 for the Coyotes.
As for the game itself, it starts in 20 minutes, so I gotta go! The Coyotes are four points out, so they've gotta win this one!
