The Senators got down the a 23 man roster yesterday, sending a pair of defensemen to Belleville and put a foward on waivers (and cleared at noon today) so that he could follow them.
Thomas Chabot is the most notable name, as the prospect who was expected to start the season in Ottawa showed enough growing pains in the pre-season that he requires some seasoning in the AHL to refine his game as a pro and learn the system that the Senators need him to be a part of.
It is the right move, and something I have discussed as the best option for both the player and the club. When he does come up for good, the club needs it to be as a 25 minute top 4 player, not an offensive presence who needs to be sheltered defensively.
Ben Harpur and Max McCormick are the other two players ticketed for Bellevegas, which means that both Logan Brown and Alex Formenton will be sticking around at least for the time being. While the call on Chabot is the right one, I am not convinced the same can be said for keeping the teenagers here. Defense is different than forward, but I don't see a reason to keep both, let alone one, of those junior eligible players around. Both have been impressive at times, granted, but both are far from polished and still have lots of growing to do, physically and mentally.
