The Red Wings have some speed. This just in.
The Ottawa Senators couldn't contain the speed of the likes of Dylan Larking and Tomas Tatar, but it was Andreas Athanasiou that was the toughest Wing to corral, and he did the damage by scoring both Detroit goals, including the winner 6 seconds into overtime.
Craig Anderson had his best start in a while for the Senators, aided by a couple of goal-posts, but was matched save for save by Jimmy Howard, and Anderson got caught flat-footed on the OT breakaway and Athanasiou made no mistake.
Anderson wasn't the only one caught flat-footed by Athansiou, as the Wing stole the puck from Erik Karlsson almost before Karlsson knew he had it right off the opening faceoff of overtime.
Ottawa had a solid effort, but the only one able to beat Howard was Ryan Dzingel, who created a turnover in front of the crease and buried it on the startled goalie. Howard made key saves off of Karlsson in the third frame.
Anderson forced overtime with some key saves of his own, most notably stopping Athanasiou on a penalty shot midway through the third period.
The Senators return home to host the Sharks on Friday night.
