After going 0-0-2 with a pair of shootout losses to open the season, the Senators have lost as many defensemen as they have games so far. After Erik Karlsson is still not quite ready, Johnny Oduya went down in game 1 and his replacement Ben Harpur falling victim on Saturday, the Senators summoned up some replacements from Belleville for the Western Canadian road trip.
Thomas Chabot, who has been in on all of the Belleville Senators' goals this season (both of them), as well as Christian Jaros have been recalled and one will get the call to play in Vancouver.
At a disappointing 0 for 12 on the power play, and with the ability to play a forward for just 4 minutes (Alex Formenton in his debut on Saturday night), it wouldn't surprise me to see both of the callups in the lineup and a 7-11 formation. Losing defensemen relatively early in both contests has forced more minutes on Cody Ceci and Dion Phaneuf, and having Chabot to help the power play at the very least would be an advantage.
I am sure this recall is sooner than they anticipated and hoped, but I hope that once Karlsson returns they do the right thing and send him back to continue the development of his all-around game, and not make the same error they made with Ceci, which was keeping him up just because he looked ok, and maybe better than expected after his half season in the minors but recalled out of necessity never to return to the AHL.
Chabot got in one game last year before he was sent back to Saint John, but Jaros is getting his first taste of regular season NHL action, but may or may not see the ice, depending on how Guy Boucher wants to play it.
