Report: Matthews tests positive for COVID-19 (maple leafs)

For the latest Leafs updates or on Twitter

According to a report from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun , Toronto Maple Leafs center and leading scorer Auston Matthews has tested positive for COVID-19 at his home in Scottsdale, AZ.

The 22-year-old spent most of the last three months in Arizona with fellow Leaf Frederik Andersen, but the goalie is no longer residing there and has tested negative.

Simmons indicates that Matthews is in quarantine at his home and is hoping to be healthy enough and eligible to travel to Toronto and participate in the opening of Leafs camp on July 10.

While this news along with reports of numerous Tampa Bay Lightning players and team personnel testing positive in Florida and forcing the temporary shutdown of their practice facilities is bad, the fact that they were discovered just under a month before the start of training camp leaves enough time to recover and participate.

The Maple Leafs have not released any statement on the report of Matthews testing positive and there is not been confirmation from his representative Judd Moldaver.
