Quick Hits: TDA, Michkov, Draft Countdown, Flyers Daily (Flyers)

Quick Hits: June 26, 2023

1) Pierre Lebrun and Jeff Marek independently reported the following today regarding Tony DeAngelo being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes: The NHL believes that such a deal would be considered salary cap circumvention if completed with retention before the one-year anniversary of Carolina trading impending restricted agent DeAngelo to Philadelphia on July 8, 2022.

Both Philadelphia and Carolina disagree with the league's position as it was Chuck Fletcher rather than Danny Briere who made the trade. Additionally, it's highly doubtful that the Flyers would trade three Draft picks to rent DeAngelo for a year and then retain cap on him to send him back where he was in 2021-22 as a means of circumventing the salary cap for Carolina's benefit.

2) Draft week is here with the first round set to commence on Wednesday and rounds 2 to 7 the next day. I have completed my annual first-round mock draft for PhiladelphiaFlyers.com. It will run on Wednesday morning.

3) Flyers Daily: Last night, Jason Myrtetus and I recorded a two-part edition of the weekly Mondays with Meltzer episode of Flyers Daily. Part 1 is live today. Part 2, which is exclusively Draft focused, goes live Wednesday. To listen to Part 1, click here.

4) One of the first orders of business for the Flyers contingent in Nashville will be for Danny Briere and Brent Flahr to have the opportunity to interview Matvei Michkov (through an interpreter). As with all teams granted interviews with the highly touted Russian winger, apart from getting to know the player a bit on a one-on-level, this big question will be about Michkov's intentions of whether to come to NHL in three years when his KHL contract expires or to potentially consider signing a KHL extension beyond that, as Kirill Karprizov did before finally coming over.
