Quick Hits: Roster Deadline, Flyers Daily, Flyers Warriors (Flyers)

Quick Hits: October 9, 2023

1) All opening night rosters must be submitted to the National Hockey League by 5:00 p.m. eastern time today. The rosters will be announced shortly thereafter. Keep in mind, however, that there are inevitably on-paper roster moves that are made for salary-cap management and numbers-games resolution purposes. Adjustments can be made starting tomorrow, reflecting the actual roster for each team's first game.

2) For example, goaltender Felix Sandström was not placed on waivers yesterday, meaning that he will be on the Flyers' roster submitted to the NHL today. This is likely for the primary purpose of preventing the Tampa Bay Lightning (who are looking for a second goaltender for their NHL roster with Andrei Vasilevskiy injured) from claiming the netminder off waivers. Secondarily, by carrying the maximum 23 players on the opening roster the Flyers can get a little closer the salary cap ceiling (thereby creating a little more allowance toward replacing LTIR-bound Ryan Ellis's $6.25 million AAV should it become necessary for the Flyers to exceed the cap).

3) Flyers Daily: Jason Myrtetus and I wrap up the 2023 preseason and discuss our views on the club as opening night looms this Thursday. To listen to this week's Mondays with Meltzer edition, click here.

4) 2023 USA Hockey Warrior Classic: Congratulations go out to the Flyers Warriors program for winning another Tier 3 championship at the USA Hockey Warrior Classic. The Flyers Warriors were playing a bit shorthanded on their Tier 1 squad, which put a strain both on their Tier 1 and (with players moving up to fill out more of) Tier 2 entries. Nonetheless, Tier 1 (Warrior Elite Division) managed a 5-0 shutout win over the St. Louis Blues Warriors on the first day of play.
