Quick Hits: October 16, 2023
1) In advance of Tuesday's home opener against the Vancouver Canucks, the Flyers will hold practice at the Wells Fargo Center on Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. EDT. The practice will be open to the public and free to attend
Apart from the practice, attending fans will hear from general manager Danny Briere and president of hockey operations Keith Jones. There will be a 20 percent merchandise discount at the OutPHItters store. The concession stand will be open at section 113, also offering a 20 percent discount on food and beverages.
After practice, members of the media will have access to tour the newly renovated areas at event level, including the Flyers' brand-new locker room and workout room (which is typically accessible only by the players).
2) Reminder: The start time of Tuesday's game has been moved to 6:00 p.m. in order to somewhat alleviate the congestion coming into and out of the Wells Fargo Center on the same night as the Phillies play an NLCS game and the Linc hosts an international soccer match between Germany and Mexico.
From 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., there will be block party at the Wells Faro Center for fans with tickets to the hockey game. There will be inflatables, face painting for kids, food and drink specials. The arena doors will be opened at 4:30 p.m. EDT.
3) Flyers Daily: On the weekly "Mondays with Meltzer" edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus and I covered a lot of ground in a 40-minute episode. We deconstructed the season-opening games in Columbus and Ottawa, talk about how the likes of Owen Tippett, Morgan Frost and Noah Cates had a few good moments apiece but need to step up to a greater degree than in the first two games, the rotation of Bobby Brink/Tyson Foerster and Egor Zamula/Emil Andrae, the play of Carter Hart and much more. 4) Phantoms update: The Lehigh Valley Phantoms rebounded from a 5-2 opening night loss to Cleveland on Saturday with a 5-2 victory against the Belleville Senators on Sunday afternoon. The Phantoms tied a franchise single-game record -- set during the first phase of club history when the team was the Philadelphia Phantoms, playing at the Spectrum -- with three shorthanded goals.
Making his AHL debut, 19-year-old winger Alexis Gendron scored his first professional goal. Tanner Laczynski bounced back from a tough opening night with a three-point afternoon (1g, 2a) on Sunday. Cooper Marody, who scored one of the Phantoms' two goals in Saturday's opener notched a power play goal on Sunday on his way to a two-point (1g, 1a) performance.
Defensive-minded defenseman Adam Ginning unexpectedly scored a shorthanded breakaway goal to open a 4-2 lead for Lehigh Valley at 1:14 of the second period. The Phantoms maintained their two-goal edge until the final minute of the third period. Rhett Gardner, who lost a seemingly legal goal on Saturday to a very questionable goaltender interference ruling after being shoved into the goalie by a Cleveland defenseman, notched a shorthanded empty net goal at 19:32 of the third period on Sunday.
